Regarded as one of Van Gogh’s finest works The Starry Night was painted during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole following a mental breakdown. Based on the view from his window at the asylum as well as his imagination this incredible painting is one of the most recognized in the world.

Vincent Van Gogh composed this painting while he was in the Saint-Rémy mental asylum, near Arles. The bold use of impasto and the beauty of the towering trees have made this one of his most recognisable works. There are various other versions of the painting, one of which features a closer view of the cypresses painted vertically, as well as a replica of this version that Van Gogh painted for his mother and sister.

The grand master of portraiture, Johannes Vermeer, was a pivotal figure of the Dutch Golden Age. Girl with a Pearl Earring depicts the fresh-faced beauty of a young woman, simply but strikingly adorned in a turban and luminous pearl. Her intimate and direct gaze enhances the energy of the portrait and offsets the dark, understated colour scheme. An enigmatic and seductive atmosphere swirls around her, while the subject remains forever still for the viewer to admire.
